Pay: £35,000.00-£48,000.00 per year

Location:

The location for this role will be based in Ilkeston office although nationwide works will be required. You are to report to your line manager situated in the specified office. You will also be required to work nights, some weekends and to work away from home as per the business needs of the company.

Main Objectives:

In this permanent senior role, you will primarily be responsible for carrying out the main types of bridge inspection; safety inspections, general inspections, principal inspections, special inspections and inspections for assessment. You will also be responsible for office duties including desktop studies, risk assessment and method statement preparation, and reporting.

A Lead Bridge Inspector will operate independently with minimal supervision and be responsible for various aspects of project management. This includes compiling site Health & Safety files/Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS), booking traffic management, arranging equipment and plant and liaising with clients, among other senior-level duties. Lead inspectors will also be expected to lead teams on site and contribute to the training and development of junior staff in line with company procedures.

Work will often require the use of specialist or confined space access, such as rope access, waterway access using boats and pontoons, and the use of Mobile Elevated work Platforms (MEWPs). Due to the nature of these tasks, a healthy level of physical and mental fitness is required for all levels of staff.

Key Accountabilities (please note this is not an exhaustive list of duties but represents the main requirements of the role):

  • Deliver general and special inspections and testing regimes to identify defects and early signs of structural failure, supporting life cycle planning.
  • Score the extent and severity of defects to the national standard and identify suitable remedial works where necessary.
  • Manage bridge asset information, capturing any missing details and updating existing information on the asset management database.
  • Support the Project Manager/Operations Manager in managing the procurement and delivery of maintenance works through internal workforce or sub-contractors, ensuring that works meet required standards and are delivered in accordance with company health and safety requirements.
  • Assist in developing processes and procedures to continually improve the service area in accordance with the principles in the relevant Code of Practice.
  • Carry out initial inspections following bridge strikes as instructed by line manager/project leads.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Codes of Practice relating to bridge maintenance activities.
  • Contribute to the full range of related duties associated with the Structures service.
  • Undertake other duties as may be reasonably expected at this level.

Person Specification:
We are looking for an exceptional individual with the following qualities:

Experience and Qualifications

  • Degree Qualified: A recognised qualification in civil engineering or a related discipline.
  • Desirable Professional Accreditation: STE04/National Bridge Certification Scheme (BICS) Accredited (or working towards accreditation), PTS Accreditation for Network Rail, CSCS Card Holder, IPAF, Roped Access Certification, PASMA, First Aid at Work
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience working on bridge inspections, testing, and related infrastructure, Experience in preparing inspection reports and other documentation.
  • Technical Proficiency: Good understanding of traffic management principles and Chapter 8 knowledge, Understanding of asset management principles, Knowledge of CDM and other health and safety legislation, Ability to self-manage and schedule inspections to adhere to required inspection timetables.
  • Industry Standards and Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with CS450 (formerly BD 63/07) The Inspection of Highway Structures, Proficient in using IT, including databases and Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.

  • Detail-Oriented: Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Flexibility and Versatility: Role is varied and suits someone equally comfortable working in an office environment or outdoors; A flexible attitude towards work is essential.
